The Time is Now Mike Matousek On Founding Flashnotes In College

The Time is Now Mike Matousek On Founding Flashnotes In College Photo via http://www.linkedin.com/in/mikematousek Matousek  eventually graduated from Kent State University in 2010 with a degree in finance and entrepreneurship, but not before he founded Flashnotes, a Boston-based online marketplace where students can buy and sell their notes and other class materials. To date, the company has acquired NoteUtopia and Moolaguides, and has raised  Series A funding amounting to 3.6 million. Matousek retold the birth of the idea for Flashnotes, reminiscing on a statistics class he really didnt understand, and consequently took copious detailed notes. The idea took hold when he sold his first batch of those notes with the notion that, maybe, other students didnt or couldnt take such detailed notes and would benefit from the sharing of his. And so the mission of Flashnotes, powering the student-to-student exchange of high quality academic materials to help supplement and complement the learning experience by harnessing commerce and the latest technologies, was conceived. Matousek  admitted that in the early stages of Flashnotes (while he was a senior at Kent State) he knew little of how to turn his idea into an actual business, and that the unknown and unexpected were some of the mental obstacles he and many entrepreneurs have tackled when first starting out. You know, I think problem solving is one of the best qualities because there will always be unexpected situations, he said. You just have to keep pushing. Indeed, the ability to accept that there is a distinct learning curve when it comes to building and launching a new business is well founded. “Founders need to be adaptable   not only because it takes a certain level of mental flexibility to understand what users want, but because the plan will probably change,  said Jessica Livingston, author of the book  Founders at Work, in an article via the 16th letter. Speaking of change, Flashnotes now not only facilitates hand-written notes (although Matousek  said this is still the most-used format), but has also expanded to include multimedia and video tutorials. Students set their own prices and earn up to 70 percent on their sales, and since the content is crowd sourced, poor notes subsequently do not get purchased and are filtered out. The site also highlights competitive earners, showing the top five student earning amounts (note the top seller has sold over $11,000 worth of study material). This expansion, after an initial startup of eight months, shows that it is indeed possible to take a simple concept the concept of sharing and turn it into a profitable business. After a few short years, Flashnotes is now using investor funds to expand services to around 300 institutions. Photo via http://dfk0oft9nprzr.cloudfront.net I learned more about life in six months than ten years of school, Matousek  said as he touched on the founding stages of Flashnotes. His story reiterates the idea that waiting until you graduate college isnt a necessity, and that if you stay committed to an idea, you can bring it to fruition. In fact, getting started in entrepreneurship early is going to leave you, at the very least, with more business knowledge than a large percentage of college students, and at most, a profitable business upon graduation. If youre grasping at ideas for a business venture and coming up blank, try to stay close to home. That is, remember how Matousek  developed the idea for Flashnotes; he was struggling in a class along with many others, and so decided to sell his notes to students with the same problem. He was directly involved in the process leading to the idea; after all, who better to create a marketplace for student study materials than a student? Some of the best ideas and startups come from the notion that if youre struggling with something, or that if you wish you had something, chances are someone else is and does too, so keep your eyes and ears open. The same idea goes for any aspect of life, not just the student side. If youre a fitness buff, for example, what can you bring to the fitness community? Think niche and look for opportunities others havent seen. Jon Taffer, host of the TV show Bar Rescue, said in an interview with Entrepreneuer.com, Years ago when I was very young, a VP of Hyatt looked at me and said, You look, but you don’t see. Taffer learned to look not just at the big picture, but also at every place setting, light fixture, and customer exchange, Entrepreneur.com emphasized. See every crack, every detail, Taffer said. I learned to really see and not just look at my business. Matousek  mentioned that the right time to make strides toward your goals and start a business is in the present, today. When I asked if he had any advice to other college students wanting to start a business, he reminds all of us that, The right time to risk is now. Tips From an Irvine Private Tutor Stress and Finals

Tips From an Irvine Private Tutor Stress and Finals Tips From an Irvine Private Tutor: Avoiding Stress During Finals Students are incredibly relieved  to realize all of their AP exams are over and that the ACT and SAT are in the bag for the spring (assuming they received the score they were hoping for). However, once students have had a bit of a rest, they remember that finals are on the horizon. It isn’t over until the end of June and it’s important that  students maintain a low level of stress (if possible) to ensure success during finals as well as a healthy and happy life in general. Why not use technology to fight undue stress and anxiety? Students are using technology to study all day long as it is. There are some great  anti-stress apps out there to help motivated, but overwhelmed, students stay relaxed during these final weeks of school (READ: 10 Reasons You Need a Summer Irvine Private Tutor). 1. Calm.com Aptly named, Calm.com helps students, and their parents, stay  rejuvenated  and rested during long-haul study sessions. Users can choose from a mixture of backgrounds including soothing raindrops, ocean waves, and floating clouds.  Students who are in need of a zone-out session can simply stare at the screen and listen to the  soothing  sounds of the rainforest, while super stressed users can choose the guided meditation function. Recommended study  break  plan: Start with the 2-minute guided meditation option after arriving home from school in order to separate classroom study from at-home  study. Proceed to take a break every hour and continue with the 2-minute guided meditation until the end of the study session.  A nice feature on Calm.com is the ability to complete the meditation in just 2 minutes, making it a reasonable break time.  Students who work late into the evening are encouraged to use the 5-minute guided meditation feature  to help them focus away from the blue light on their screen and relax them off to sleep. A well-rested student is more likely to  perform successfully at school. 2. Breathe2Relax Another great anti-stress app is Breathe2Relax. This particular app helps students calm down when they become overwhelmed with test prep or when they are attempting to cram for finals. Many people start to breathe too quickly or even skip breaths here and there when they are not mindful of their stress levels; this particular app can help get students back on track. Whether a student takes a 5-minute break every 30 minutes to an hour to simply breathe, or if they plug in their headphones and use the app for the entirety of their study session, healthy breathing can help students power through long amounts of homework or test preparation. Recommended study break plan: students who are studying for exams will often become overwhelmed with the thought of the subject matter at hand. Additionally, students may feel overwhelmed from the time they wake up in the morning until they finish their final exams in the afternoon. Students can use the app throughout their studies or they can listen to it in the car ride to school (assuming theyre not driving) for 2 minutes or so prior to the actual exam. Students who are less anxious are more likely to remember important material and do well on their tests. 3. White Noise Students who are studying late into the evening will often have trouble falling asleep. Its very rare for a student to finish studying at 10 p.m. and then be asleep by 10:15. These stresses during finals coupled with looking at a computer screen late at night will generally make it difficult for a student, or anyone, to fall asleep straight away, preventing them from getting those all-important 8 hours. Students who need to fall asleep fast but still have their mind on final examinations can use an app such as White Noise. Students can choose from a number of different sounds such as ocean waves, stream water, or even an air conditioner to help them fall asleep. Users dont have to worry about listening to the lovely sounds of the ocean for an entire 8 hours because they can easily set the app to shut off after a certain amount of time. Bottom Line Although studying, especially in high school, is a huge part of a students life, its important that they maintain good health and happiness throughout their final examination study journey. Taking a few minutes here and there to relax, re-center, or rest is a great way to aid in an overall study/life balance. Fast Food Breakfast Combos for Less Than $5 and 600 Calories

Fast Food Breakfast Combos for Less Than $5 and 600 Calories Image via Pexels Taco Bell I could write an entire article on Taco Bell, so keep your eyes peeled for a lunch edition. It is widely known that Taco Bell has many vegetarian options, and a majority of them are on the $1 value menu! A Grilled Breakfast Burrito ($1, 340 cal) is a good start to any day, and with a choice between bacon, sausage, or plain potato, there is something for all taste buds and lifestyles. If you’re watching calories extra closely, swap out nacho cheese for pico de gallo (.25 extra,   5 cals.) Another good option is a $1 Breakfast Soft Taco, scaling in at only 230 cals, so grab a few, some, for now, some for later! If we are in an extra treat yo’self mood, add a sweet boost to your morning with Cinnabon Delights 2-pack   (160 cals) with a hot cup of coffee trust me, youll thank me later! After some internet sleuthing, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Taco Bell coffee has its own fanbase, and ranked #6 on best fast food coffees. From my experience, their coffee does not taste like its collected dust in a carafe for a week, which is a huge win considering Ive paid two times the price for a cup of stagnant freshly brewed joe from big chain coffee giants. No matter what combination of items you choose your total will still be under $5, so mix and match and don’t forget your choice of sauce (I have a ton in my center console if you forgot to ask for a few more). Image via Pexels Dunkin Donuts This is also another sweet spot of mine (literally) because it hasnt been that long since DD expanded to our West Coast, and now I dont have to choose between awesome coffee, breakfast, and donuts- I love a one-stop drive-thru. For this article, there is one breakfast item that is an all-around winner: the $2.39 Wake-Up Wrap (meat-optional but at no extra cost). With no meat, the wrap comes out to 180 cals, and 20% sodium (skip cheese if youre watching that salt percentage). For  a protein, boost add your choice of meat (maple sugar bacon, bacon, ham, sausage, or turkey sausage) and youll still be just under 300 cals. Ask for their vinegary packaged hot sauce and extra napkins and youll arrive at that early morning class with a happy tummy and stain-free clothes. Now for my favorite part of this breakfast order: ICED COFFEE, YALL. Watch out for promotions, such as any medium iced coffee for $1.50 *stadium thunder applause* which graciously includes cream and sugar (or syrup); substitute cow milk for almond milk for just .25 extra (a steal!). My usual order is an original blend with french vanilla and almond milk. DD Original Blend hot coffee also made the list of top fast food coffees, so try a small black (or not, do you) coffee to stay on budget. wrap + medium iced coffee ($2.79) + tax =$ 4.93 McDonalds McDonalds made the cut because I will sit in a drive-thru line just for a hot coffee. Side note: Gaviña Gourmet Coffee supplies West Coast McDonalds with their famous roast. Does Don Francisco or Cafe La Llave espresso ring a bell? Yep, those are also Gaviña Coffee, too. So I have to do it for my Cuban culture and include a cup of McDonalds coffee. But it doesnt stop there. While youre at it, pick up a $2 McGriddle (430 cals) and $1 greek yogurt parfait (150 cals). No matter what size you get a cup of hot coffee will cost you less than $2 and you get youre still on a  budget, so ball out! Now Im far from a nutritionist, but you do what you can with the time you make and the bills in your pocket. I hope these suggestions help out my early risers and my broke college mates alike. Enjoy!

Why Does Pure Chemistry Make So Much Sense?

Why Does Pure Chemistry Make So Much Sense? To me, the pure chemistry definition makes a lot of sense. I understand it better than most. Not just because I think it is one of the best definitions, but also because it is also one of the simplest.Let me explain to you what I mean by the definition of pure chemistry. Basically, there are only two types of substances. There are those that exist and those that don't. Think about it, is the answer 'All those that do not exist' actually an answer? That answer is simple enough for you to see if you really try. You see, to me, all those substances that do not exist in nature, because they are made up of atoms. Things that consist of these atoms are called compounds. What do you think about this, is the definition of pure chemistry, right? What we are looking at is not just any kind of substance, but a compound of one substance that is completely different from the other substances. Is it true or even possible? Can it be true? That is what you hav e to think about, but believe me, it is!Are you aware of the amazing phenomenon that is currently happening all around you? Scientists are discovering and studying these very same things. They have found out that they are the results of exactly the same natural laws that we have learned over the years. These laws, such as conservation of energy, order, and so on, are absolutely and unequivocally true. The thing is, that it took me a long time to realize that fact and a great deal of study and research to get to the point where I would fully realize and appreciate it. And even after finally realizing this, I still don't think it makes a lot of sense, but that's OK. In the end, my explanation is not really important, is it?

How to Find a Berkeley Computer Science Tutor

How to Find a Berkeley Computer Science TutorThe job of a Berkeley computer science tutor can be a very rewarding experience. To this end, it pays to do the homework before choosing a Berkeley tutor.First, consider if you have the time and the interest to go to Berkeley full time. Many of these schools are full time and require quite a bit of traveling for students. If you are working in an office and doing the work from home, that is an option. However, some programs will not allow you to go home for the summer.Second, check to see what the Berkeley faculty has to say about their tutors. A good example of this is in the game 'Hide and Seek.' The game involves hidden figures and the players solve the clues. Many of the clues require certain numbers, and this has implications for how the game is played. For instance, if the figures are called out to be six or seven, the game involves something like: the number that the clue refers to can either be six or seven. The teacher would explai n the rules to the student and help to help the student to solve the clues in a way that works best for him or her.Third, determine how long you are willing to commit to a Berkeley tutor. Some of these programs have tutors that require you to get to class and back on time each day. This is not a feasible option for many students, but the tutor may have the time.Fourth, consider your own schedule. As mentioned above, many of these programs require students to meet a certain number of classroom hours, while leaving for the rest of the day to attend the activities at Berkeley. Obviously, if you cannot do this on a regular basis, then you may have to look elsewhere. While this may be the case, most of these programs offer tutors that are available for weekend sessions, which may be more possible for you. Finally, it pays to be sure that the Berkeley computer science tutor you choose has a degree from one of the world's top programs. A level of certification is not required by these progr ams, but certification from a premier institution such as the National Association of College Advisors or the Association for Computing Machinery would be very beneficial.

SSAT Prep Tips for Your Child

SSAT Prep Tips for Your Child As a parent, you of course want the best for your child. While theyre largely in charge of their own willingness to learn, there are many ways you can help your child prepare for standardized tests, particularly when it comes to SSAT prep for your child. The SSAT is a standardized test used to help assess the capabilities of students who are trying to enroll in an independent school. Some SSAT prep tips for your child include helping him or her understand the makeup of the test, explaining what the environment will be like, and simply being encouraging and positive as they prepare. Help interpret the SSAT test Students who enter into a test feeling prepared are likely going to be more confident, which often leads to better scores. This begins with a basic knowledge of the structure, timing, and possible outcomes of the exam. Make sure your student knows what the test is used for and how it is graded. The SSAT covers reading, math, and verbal skills and is offered in either the Standard variation (given on eight Saturdays during the academic year around the world) or the Flex variation (given to an individual or group on a date outside the Standard range). The SSAT is given at three levels, including: Elementary (3rd and 4th grade) Middle (5th through 7th grade) Upper (8th through 11th grade) It is a norm-referenced test, meaning it compares individual scores against results from a statistically selected group of test takers who have previously taken the exam. Administer SSAT practice tests You can begin assisting your student by administering SSAT practice tests to identify places he or she may need to study further. Do this at the start of your preparation, and repeat the process as your student works to build skills. Approximate the testing environment as best as you can, timing your student, replicating a quiet place, and administering breaks, etc. in the same way your child will experience on test day. Practice SSAT skills at home You can practice building reading, math, and verbal skills at home with your student. To practice reading and verbal skills, have your student report on the books he or she is reading, or read a book as a family. Define vocabulary words, review plot, and talk about word origins. Afterwards, you might have your student practice the written portion by responding to a book-related prompt or another prompt that you develop. Review together for elements like punctuation and clarity of ideas. Work on math skills by doing problems together or getting a book of fun math activities. Problems on the SSAT tend to focus on spatial skills, patterns, and sequencing, which can be fun skills to work on together. Help build confidence for SSAT test day Many students develop test anxiety when theyre studying for a large standardized test, so do what you can to combat this. Equip your student with coping mechanisms (like meditation, deep breaths, or repetition) that can be practiced before and even during test day. Let your child know that youre proud of his or her efforts. Before the test, make sure your child is well rested, has a nutritious meal, and is comfortable. It can be useful to review basic tips with your student: read and thoroughly follow directions, finish the question before reviewing the answers, pace yourself, and so on. If your child is taking the Elementary SSAT, encourage him or her to answer every question, as there is no penalty for incorrect answers. For the other two levels, wrong answers do deduct points, so explain to your child what that means and how that might alter his or her approach. [RELATED:How is the SSAT Scored?] Reviewing basic test-taking practices with your child can be helpful and also boost confidence, though you should be careful about introducing new information to your child directly before the test, as it may cause more anxiety. If you decide to seek further assistance for your child, SSAT tutoring may provide the extra help needed. With a little preparation, both parents and students should feel better about the SSAT.
